RETAIN THE NEW GENERATION

The “New Generation” is unlike any other we have seen in the past! Often they are referred to in a negative manner. Some of the individuals do fit the negative stereotype.
However, there are many individuals who are responsible, motivated, educated and professional. The second type of individual describes what you want to hire for your opportunities!
These individuals bring energy and often state-of-the-art technical knowledge. The technical skills they possess can literally change an entire Company. The United States has been suffering with an unprecedented shortage of these workers. The positive impact they have had is not quantifiable.
However, these employees sometimes come with requirements that may be a challenge for you, the Employer.
1. They are very interested in defining their Career Paths and they will accept positions strictly to build their resume and level of experience for their next job!
2. Many of these individuals are too comfortable with rapid change. They are much more comfortable with change than the more experienced employees. This may cause conflict between the two generations. They may have different work expectations.
3. The New Generation tends to expect more from their Employer. They expect a career path with the Company. They are very interested in the way they can make more money…soon.

How can you meet the New Generation’s needs and still retain the employees that are worth keeping? Here are four suggestions:
1. Understand their background, and customize their work accordingly. Surveys have found that these individuals often like short-deadline, multifaceted projects.
2. Lead through learning. This group of employees holds a high value on learning and developing new skills. New hires like a mentor/coach to guide them initially through the job. It helps build their confidence.
3. Get continuous feedback. Try to talk with each individual one-on-one to check how they are progressing. You can also get feedback by asking them questions online.
Overall, like anything else, the “Generation X” brings to our workforce both positives and negatives. They will most definitely have a dramatic impact on everyone in the current Job Market! It is up to US, to key in on their positive attributes and attempt to minimize the negative qualities!
