TIPS FOR “EFFECTIVE” PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

1. Treat “reviews” as a Positive Experience! Discuss the review process when you hire a new employee therefore, they know what to expect.

2. Inform your employees in advance about their reviews and don’t cancel or reschedule, if at all possible.

3. Never take telephone calls during your reviews.

4. Make sure your employee knows that you have taken the time to review their progress.

5. Allow and encourage your employee to openly share ideas, discuss problems or concerns and then offer solutions.

6. Make sure to take notes throughout the entire review. This shows your employee that you are listening to what they are saying.

7. Review all statistics and discuss their current ratios. If they do not have statistics and ratios then discuss their actual responsibilities and tasks. You must determine what is most important to your employee. What will motivate them to greatness? They will only succeed for THEIR reasons, not yours!

8. Regardless of the position, you must set realistic goals. Your employee must be able to attain the level of performance that you both agree upon.

9. Listen, listen, listen. Do not interrupt while your employee is talking. Try to avoid sharing your opinions, stick to the facts and your review forms.

10. It is crucial that you discuss positive topics as well as any negative areas. Have a plan of action completed in advance to assist this person in attaining their goals.

11. Always treat your employee with respect!

12. Follow-up shortly after their review to insure your employee is on the right “track”.
